A prendersi la scena sono spesso e volentieri i premi assegnati a film o attori, ma uno dei premi Oscar più importanti e rilevanti è senza dubbio quello alla miglior regia, assegnato sin dal 1929 – primissima ma anche unica edizione dove furono assegnati due premi, uno per il miglior regista di un film commedia ed uno per il miglior regista di un film drammatico – dalla Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences al miglior regista della specifica stagione cinematografica. Il regista che ha ottenuto più vittorie è John Ford (4), il più candidato William Wyler (12) mentre il più giovane vincitore della statuetta Damien Chazelle.
